Meghalaya seeks Rs 1,600 cr to develop border areas Shillong : Meghalaya government has sought a package of Rs 1600 crore to develop its areas bordering Bangladesh.
"Partition, closed border, loss of access to traditional markets and commercial opportunities have left the border areas with Bangladesh underdeveloped and disadvantaged," Chief Minister Donkupar Roy said in a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday.
"The Centre should formulate a comprehensive and substantial package for the development of these areas, covering infrastructure, communication, basic services and agriculture.
A transportation package for roads parallel to the international border and the existing link roads to important border points would amount to Rs 1050 crore," Roy said, adding Rs 1600 crore would go a long way in developing the areas.
Contending that influx of foreign illegal migrants was a matter of grave concern, he impressed upon the Centre to implement the multi-purpose national identity card scheme in the state.
Roy said "keeping in view that the state police have had to face not only local militant groups, but also contend with the activities of insurgent groups from other states and many of whom ave obtained sanctuary in neighbouring country," the Centre should support the state to enhancing the security apparatus.
The chief minister sought help from the Centre with regards to additional Indian Reserve battalions, a commando battalion, disaster management facilities and strengthening of infiltration check-post facilities.
