Imphal, March 28 2022:
Wakhallon Manaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak has urged the department concerned to clarify at the earliest reason for non inclusion of Manipuri/Meetei language in the national level Common University Entrance Test (CUET) made mandatory for admission in central universities.
In a release, WAMA Kangleipak stated that an emergency meeting of the organisation was held at its Tera office on Monday chaired by its president M Naokhomba Meetei.
The meeting resolved that the Language Department, Manipur University and the government must explain to the public reason for excluding Manipuri/Meetei language as a medium of writing for the CUET to be conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC) for admission in 45 central universities, it stated.
WAMA also cautioned that it will not remain silent if clarifications were not issued in this regard in a timely manner.
Why has Meetei Mayek, which has been recognised by the state government as well as being presently studied till 3rd semester at university level, not made part of national level examinations?, it posed.
WAMA Kangleipak demanded that the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 written in Bengali Script be changed to Written in Meetei Mayek and implement the same on the ground.
It also questioned the use of Bengali script instead of Meetej Mayek in writing MA Manipuri exams conducted by Manipur University.
If the language of the state continues to be ignored in the national level exams, then, any unwanted incident fallout should be the responsibility of department concerned.
The process of recognising Manipuri language as a classical language that has remained pending in Language Department should also be fast tracked, failing which it will be construed as invitation for agitation, it further cautioned.
