Speaking on the occasion Dr Rajendra Singh pointed out that Mithun is reared since time immemorial in the hill areas of Manipur and it is very important for the tribal people as it is related to their customs and culture.
However, the population of Mithun is declining fast even though Manipur stood 2nd after Arunachal Pradesh in rearing this animal among the Northeastern States.
He further pointed out that in Manipur; Chandel district has the largest numbers of Mithun which indicates that the climate and topography of Chandel District is best suited for the habitation of Mithun.
So, the farmers of the District should rear this animal on a large scale since this activity can improve our economy by generating income.
More than 200 farmers including village chiefs from different parts of Chandel disrict are taking part in the campaign which would carry on till October 29 .
