Thoubal, July 04 2021:
Voluntary Network for a Green Earth Manipur convener Laishram Deban has urged the state government to enact a law to protect trees and bamboos growing in non-forest across the state.
Deban stated this during a tree plantation drive conducted by the Network in connection with observance of Van Mahotsav-2021 under the theme 'Plant trees and get water' along the banks of Arong river from Khangabok to Ikop Pat on Sunday.
According to Deban, unrestrained felling of trees has altered even the seasonal rainfall locally known as Ingagee Nong while water supply in Imphal city has been severely affected as there is not enough water at Singda Dam to supply.
If this trend continues for the next 20 years, huge problem of water shortage in the state is very much eminent, he cautioned and appealed to people to plant trees for the sake of next generation.
Van Mahotsav is being celebrated since the year 1950 but people of the present generation face climate change and hence people need to understand the reason behind this, he said, and regretted that people continue to cut trees without any concern in non-forest area.
Voluntary Network for a Green Earth has so far planted around 7000 saplings of different varieties with around 6000 of these trees having matured.
