Programme on Scientific Cultivation and Importance of Tuber crops held

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jacintha Lazarus while inaugurating the one day training programme on "Scientific Cultivation and importance of Tuber crops" called upon the villagers and participants to promote the cultivation of tuber crops for healthy piggery and economic benefits.
Speaking at the training, the DC stated that, tuber crops like high yielding sweet potatoes plants, tapioca, large yam and others are favorable in the District due to its soil and weather.
These crops are best natural feeds for rearing pigs which pork being one of the main dishes of the non-vegetarian populace.
She also spoke on the necessity to use pesticides and insecticide to curb any plant diseases and giving a healthy growth of the tuber crops which is easily planted and grown anywhere of the District.
Organized by Central Agricultural University (CAU) Imphal, under All India Coordinated Research Project on Tuber Crops, the one day programme as also graced by Prof JM Laishram, Dean College of Agriculture, CAU as the President.
Resources persons from CAU, Dr AK Bijaya Devi, Associate Prof (Horticulture)/PI, AICRP-CAU spoke on the scientific cultivation of the Tuber crops while Dr Kh Ibohal Singh spoke on Insect pest and diseases management of tuber crops and Dr Th Ranadhir Singh spoke on tuber crops-a potential pig feed of Manipur.
Briefing to our staff, Dr AK Bijaya Devi explained that, Tuber crops for piggery fees is encourage among the SHGs as it can financially benefit those groups.
These crops are best foods for pigs and the market for pork meat in Hill areas are best favorable.
The Indo-Burma region soil has provided better prospect for tuber crops to grow that, the high yielding seeds of the crops are also distributed from time to time when required.
Dr Th Ranadhir Singh spoke on the piggery prospect with proper housing, selection of breed, feeding, breeding, protection against diseases, care during pregnancy, care of piglets and marketing.
