Bodies, institutions observe international Human Rights Day

Imphal, December 10 2022: As in other parts of the globe, International Human Rights Day-2022 was observed throughout the state by different institutions and organisations on Saturday.

Manipur University vice chancellor professor Naorem Lokendra, who attended an observance event organised by law department of the university as chief guest, said students particularly those pursuing career in law should shoulder their responsibility in creating awareness to people on law and human rights.

As chief guest of the observance held on the theme 'Dignity, freedom, and justice for all', professor Lokendra said issues and inconveniences being faced in contemporary society would reduce if entire citizens of the country understand the Constitution and laws of the land.

Being inhabited by different communities, the North East region often faces ethnic and serious social issues from time to time and as such students have huge responsibility in reducing or addressing these problems, he stressed adding that resolving these issues will be helpful if students have full knowledge of Constitution and laws of the country.

The observance was also attended by former member of Manipur State Human Rights Commission Ng Nongyai, Imphal Times editor Rinku Khumukcham and MU finance officer Elangbam Nixon Singh.

International Human Rights Organisation, Mani pur also observed the Day at its Moirangkhom office during its president Oinam Jotin said human rights are associated with every human since birth.

Just as every human being has rights, there must also be duties but some individuals demand only their rights while failing to understand their duties, he opined while stressing that every human being must demand their rights and discharge their duties as well.

He also said that a society will move forward when people understand their rights and duties well.

He then urged government to fill the vacant chairperson's post of the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

The observance was also attended by MHRC former member RK Rajendra, Organisation's representative Zohar Gupta and member secretaries.

On the other hand, The Frontier Manipur in coordination with Rights and Risks Analysis Group, New Delhi organised a one-day interactive session on 'Use of national human rights mechanism for protection of journalists' at the conference hall of Human Rights Alert, Kwakeithel.

It was attended by Human Rights Alert executive director Babloo Loitongbam, The Frontier Manipur associate editor Nandalal Laishram and many journalists.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Lady Advocates' Association (AMLAA) in collaboration with Imphal West District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) observed the International Human Rights Day at Cheirap Court complex, Uripok on Saturday.

The observance was attended by All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) president Puyam Tomcha Meitei, AMLAA president Ch Kiranbala Devi and former president Ph Sund-ari Devi as the presidium members along with members of AMBA and AMLAA.
