National Cleanliness Campaign kicks off

The National Cleanliness Campaign under Swachh Bharat Mission kicked-off on Saturday at the State PHED compound here.
The campaign was launched nationwide.
Additional Chief Secretary WL Hangshing flagged off the campaign by planting saplings in the office compound.
A rally carrying the message on cleaning Manipur was taken out in Khwairamband Keithel area.
PHED Chief Engineer Haobam Sunil said the campaign will continue till the end of October.
He expressed the importance of frequent public awareness on cleanliness.
Sunil said hand washing is one of the important components of healthy life and that children must be taught how to use toilet to avoid open defecation.
Every household needs to maintain sanitary latrine, he added.
Commenting on water borne diseases, he appealed to all not to throw waste into rivers saying safe drinking water is made from river waters.
Contaminated water requires higher percentage of chemicals in the purification process which ultimately affects people's health.
He also appealed to the media to play a bigger role in the effort to conserve raw and pure water in the greater interest of the public.
