AITUC condemns Govt's callous handling, says drivers left to fend for themselves

Imphal, September 11 2026: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur has condemned the Government's callous handling of drivers during the economic blockade.

The United Naga Council (UNC) intensified its earlier inter-district blockade into an indefinite economic blockade on National Highways from 1 am of September 9, demanding justice and befitting punishment for six Nagas allegedly killed and disposed of from Leilon Vaiphei.

In a release, AITUC said while bandhs and blockades cause utmost hardship to the public, the Government remains indifferent, merely buying time without providing adequate security or reaching an understanding with agitating groups.

Despite poor road condition on Imphal-Jiribam highway, drivers and handymen transport petroleum products and essential goods risking fives, with many killed or permanently disabled in accidents.

AITUC had repeatedly urged the Government to provide protection force and repair roads.

It alleged that on the ongoing blockade, tanker and truck convoys from Jiribam were brought by CRPF security only up to Awangkhul and Noney, where miscreants attacked over 20 vehicles with stones and catapults, injuring over five drivers and handymen, two seriously.

Security and police stations failed to act, and CRPF convoys did nothing during the sustained attack, leaving drivers to suffer, it claimed.

AITUC said the Government must bear full responsibility and announced a public campaign against such negligence.
