Department of Commerce and Industries, Manipur, in association with Manipur University, on Saturday, conducted a one-day workshop on the topic, 'The state of distillers and dealers : The local liquor', at Manipur University Court hall.
Chief guest of the event, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, during his speech, said that one major setback of the State is its inability to secure a position in the Nation's industries map till date.
One factor that hinders industrial growth in the State is the frequent economic blockades along National highways.
Lack of industries have deprived the people of job opportunities that comes along with industrial growth, the Minister said.
Another prominent factor that have contributed to the State's failure in securing a place in the industrial map is the limited amount of resources available in the State.
The State produces one of the finest and the strongest liquor.
Although consumption and sale of liquors are prohibited in the State, local made liquors are available in abundance every where.
Urging for open sale of liquor in the State, the Commerce and Industries Minister have also proposed large scale manufacture and import of local made liquor to generate income for the people.
Praising the quality of Sekmai liquor which has attained the name 'Laiyu', Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that his Department has applied for a geographical indication (GI) tag for the product from higher authorities.
MU Vice-Chancellor Professor H Nandakumar Sharma and Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Dr Th Dhaballi Singh were also present at the workshop.
