HM talks with JFD, no breakthrough

Imphal, September 11 2026: In the wake of the announcement made by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) to prevent Central and State Government employees from attending their offices, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam talked with leaders of JFD but the two sides could not come to any agreement.

Speaking to media persons at Soibam Leikai, Imphal East today, JFD finance secretary Sunil Karam said that they held a meeting with Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam at the Home Minister's quarters at Babupara at 10 am today.

The JFD team went to the meeting after they received an invitation from the Home Minister yesterday.

During the meeting, the Home Minister appealed to the JFD to withdraw its agitation of shutting down Government offices.

Replying to the appeal, the JFD asked the Home Minister when the State Government would go to Delhi to press the Assembly resolution of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year and when an official notification would be issued for updating the NRC .

But Govindas could not give a definite reply to this question, Sunil Karam said.

Nonetheless, the Home Minister maintained that the State Government and BJP are keen on updating the NRC .

Govindas said that they were not going to Delhi as the Assembly session had just concluded and the Vice President had just visited the State.

The Home Minister assured the JFD team that State Government representatives would go to Delhi in the last week of September.

He also assured that the State Government would act in line with the people's pulse, according to Sunil Karam.

Informing that the State Government wrote to the Union Home Minister on September 10, 2026 asking for deferment of all census works, the Home Minister exuded confidence that the census exercise would be put off in totality.

However, the JFD team made it clear that their agitation of shutting down Government offices and preventing Government employees from attending their offices would not be withdrawn until and unless the Government of India issues a gazette notification on deferring census exercise in totality and an official notification is issued for updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year, Sunil Karam said.

He also vehemently condemned the arrest of three JFD members from Porompat SDO office by Imphal East District Police.

Saying that the arrest of JFD members would not bring any positive result, Sunil Karam demanded unconditional release of all the arrested members at the earliest.

Rather than giving verbal assurance, the State Government must go to Delhi and persuade the Central Government to issue an official notification on updating the NRC in Manipur if it does not want a strong public protest, Sunil Karam asserted.
