Saplings distributed to replace poppy plantation

As part of the government's War on Drugs 2.0 Mission, the Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department distributed tree saplings to the beneficiaries of Chandel district to prevent poppy plantations, in a function organised by District Office -Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Chandel at Khopijang village on Wednesday.
The distribution function was attended by Chandel Deputy Commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar; Autonomous District Council (ADC), ex-member (Songjang DCC) T Sheithang Haokip; Horticulture and Soil Conservation Chandel district officer Kshetrimayum Prabha, ADC Chandel Md Firoz Ahamad, District Office Horticulture and Soil Conservation AAOs N Rabikumar, N Rabichandra and AHI N Bikram.
As part of the function, saplings of Kachai Lemon, Litchi, Turmeric, Cashew Nut and Pineapple were distributed to the beneficiaries of the district through their respective village chiefs.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Rajkumar urged for planting the saplings at suitable locations, for which testing measures will soon be taken up.
He further urged the locals for setting up nurseries in nearby vicinities instead of going afar to get the saplings in need.
In their addresses, T Sheithang Haokip urged for taking up soil testing measures at the earliest so as to allow the people to have high yield, while district officer Kshetrimayum Prabha advised the farmers to also take up animal husbandry (pigs, poultry, etc) or handloom as farming alone cannot guarantee a stable income.
The different departments are always ready to assist in this regard, she assured.
