Imphal, September 09 2022:
While pointing out that rate of farm mechanisation in the state is low when compared with other north-eastern states, ICAR-Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya's scientist Hijam Jiten has stressed the need for creating awareness on the benefits of farm mechanisation among the farmers of the state.
He was attending a brainstorming session on 'Farm Mechanisation in North East Region' jointly organised by ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute Meghalaya and ICAR-Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre held at the latter's premises at Lamphelpat, here, on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Jiten observed that most of the farmers in the north eastern states lack awareness on the benefits of farm mechanisation.
As a result, farmers are still relying on indigenous hand-held tools thereby hindering the economy and productivity of the farmers.
On the other hand, buying machines is a costly matter and as such, the government needs to provide higher subsidy in order to enhance income and productivity of farmers.
The government also establishes Custom Hiring Centre so that farmers can hire the machine at low rate, he added.
Scientists and experts from different ICAR and agricultural institutes as well as CAU Imphal, who attended the programme, spoke on different aspects of farm mechanisation and its benefits to farmers.
Later, a resolution was adopted for submission of proposal to the government for enhancing farmers' welfare services.
