FMD, Brucellosis control programme begins

Veterinary and Animal Husbandry minister Khasim Vashum launched the directorate's second round of Food & Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis Control Programme organised under National Animal Diseases Control Programme at the directorate's Farmers' Training Centre located near Sanjenthong, here on Monday.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry secretary Michael Achom, director Dr Ng Ibotombi and joint director RK Khogendrajit also attended the inaugural function of the vaccination programme.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Khasim Vashum stressed the need for dedication and commitment on the part of doctors and attendants posted in different districts in order to make the diseasecontrol programme successful.
While stating that veterinary and animal husbandry is an important department and it is playing a major role in the state's economy through various measures including prevention of seasonal diseases for livestock, he called upon the employees to understand their responsibility in the department and diligently perform their duties wherever are posted.
Further stating that there are several livestock farmers in the hills too and they need the assistance of the department, he said also assured to address their grievances and promote the department.
In his address, director Dr Ibotombi said that the department is planning to vaccinate 2.60 lakh cattle against FMD and Brucellosis in three months under the programme.
Cattle suffering from FMD produce less milk even after several days of getting cured and as such the programme was taken up to prevent widespread infection and with the objective to eradicate FMD from the country by 2030.Brucellosis vaccine should be given to calf in the age group of 4 to 6 months, he pointed out.
