Imphal/CCpur, May 07 2023:
Even as the Government has started evacuation operations of displaced families and individuals, it is suspected that many Meitei people may still be taking shelter at three relief camps set up in Churachandpur district.
The exact or even normative figure cannot be worked out.
The three relief camps are set up at 36 Assam Rifles camp, Churachandpur DC complex and at Tuibong village.
Notably, many families were displaced after people in large numbers started vandalising/torching houses, places of worship in different parts of Manipur in the aftermath of Tribal Solidarity March of All Tribal Student's Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 .
It is reported that the occupants of the relief camps, including infants and senior citizens, are being guarded by security personnel closely to prevent any untoward incidents.
As per the people taking shelter at 36 AR camp, some of the occupants lost consciousness after their houses were torched by miscreants.
Saying that they are facing difficulties in living at the relief camp due to lack of medical facilities and other amenities, they maintained that many of the occupants including diabetic patients have not been taking their daily dose of medicines since the past few days.
"We eat whatever little is provided to us but the problem is the lack of drinking water," they added.
Claiming that the drinking water, which is not suitable for drinking, which is provided is very meagre, they added that many of them have fallen sick.
Saying that unavailability of adequate drinking water, medicines and treatment facilities have put the lives of many at the relief camps in danger, they said the Government can deliver the needed medicines and other basic needs using a helicopter if they are willing to help the occupants.
"We don't know when we will be taken to a safer location," they continued and appealed to the State Government to do the needful at the earliest.
Meanwhile, law and order situation has improved considerably in the adjoining areas of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts as instances of mob violence and vandalisation of public and private properties weren't reported today.
As per our Moirang correspondent, hundreds of families from Torbung, Bangla, Waikhurok, Phougakchao Ikhai, Saiton, Nganukon are currently taking shelters at different relief camps set up in Bishnupur, especially Moirang Constituency.
