Imphal, May 07 2015 :
Even though Congress wanted to contest the coming ADC polls in all the 144 seats, strong pressures and threats from various sections compelled the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to field lesser number of candidates.
However, Congress will have a major victory as Congress-backed independent candidates will contest from the remaining seats, said MPCC president Gaikhangam with full optimism.
Interacting with media persons today afternoon at Congress Bhawan, Gaikhangam said that militant outfits interfering in the ADC election is an unfortunate and unwanted move.
It will be appreciable if they decide to come out and contest the elections Constitutionally.
Manipur Government is not giving a free hand to these outfits, but the Government is having a 'measured' dealing with them as many unwanted cases of violence may arise and may worsen the problem.
Moreover, outfits which are under Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Central Government are also disturbing the election process out of their frustrations with the Centre for not getting their demands.
On the other hand, the Home Minister assured that befitting punishment will be given under the law to the culprit responsible for the Pallel firing during a Lai Haraoba procession now that the accused has surrendered to the police.
Reacting to a warning given by a hill-based outfit that no peace will prevail in Manipur if the Government fails to meet the Alternative Arrangement demand, Gaikhangam said that the warning should not be made at all and is not necessary as it is beyond the capability of the State Government and only the Central Government can handle this 'arrangement' .
Condemning the warning, Gaikhangam added that the Government will not allow Alternative Arrangement to affect the interest of Manipur in any way.
