MEELAL celebrates foundation day, fetes students

Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) Kangleipak celebrated its 19th foundation day along with felicitation of meritorious students, who secured 90 per cent and above marks in Meetei Mayek (Manipuri) subject in class 10 and 12 examinations at Manipur Press Club, here on Thursday with MEELAL advisor Moirangthem Naodalenkhomba, legal advisor Ngangom Premkumar and president Yanglem Biren as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, MEELAL secretary general (in-charge) Naorem Nongmailembi Leima recounted that MEELAL was formed on August 18, 2003 as a conglomerate body of 38 organisations.
MEELAL signed an agreement with the government on May 18, 2005 and concluded its two-year long movement for replacing Bengali script with Meetei Mayek in Manipuri subject.
Consequently, restoration of script began from 2006 in class 1 and 2, and today Meetei Mayek has replaced Bengali script up to the Master's level.
This is a huge achievement and the credit goes to the people of the state, she said Further informing that MEELAL and media houses of the state have agreed to replace the Bengali script publication with Meetei Mayek from January 15, 2023 following a series of People's Convention, she expressed confidence that such an initiative will cultivate the habit of news reading among the youth and younger population of the state and help in shaping the society.
Nongmailembi also recalled how MEELAL leader late Chingsubam Akaba led the movement with Meetei National Front since 1978 and how several MEELAL members were arrested during the movement and many were injured, leaving some permanently disabled.
Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of MEELAL founder president Chingsubam Akaba and 9th edition of MEELAL souvenir released on the occasion.
