Woman held in drug bust given 4-yr prison time

The Court of Special Judge ND&PS on Monday sentenced one Lalchamrem (60) w/o (L) Lalthanlian of Khumujamba Leikai in Churachandpur district, who was arrested by the Drug Cell Unit of Churachandpur, to 4 years in prison.
On November 7, 2017, a combined team of Drug Cell Unit, Churachandpur PS and Women PS conducted a raid at Lalchamrem's residence after receiving information about her (Lalchamrem) peddling drugs.
During the raid, the combined team recovered 40 polythene packets containing heroin inside a wooden bed, along with Rs 12,90,000 in cash.
After listening to the details of the case, the Court convicted Lalchamrem under Section 21 (B) of ND&PS Act.
Under this Act, she is to serve rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
However, the defence counsel submitted to the Court that this was Lalchamrem's first offence.
In addition to being a widow, Lalchamrem has already undergone two major operations and is well past her prime.
As such, the counsel appealed to the court to award minimum sentence.
The Court listened to the submissions of both sides and sentenced Lalchamrem to 4 years in pris -on.
The time she stayed in jail during the trial period will be commuted from the total sentence period and she is to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 .
If she fails to pay the fine, she has to stay in jail for two more months.
Meanwhile, a team of Special Commando Unit, Khabeisoi arrested a man with drugs at around 5.15 pm on Sunday.
The arrested man has been identified as Makakmayum Amas (23) s/o M Sikandar of Pangong Maning Leikai.
According to a police report, the team arrested Amas from his residence with 30 gm of brown sugar packed in 25 vials.
Both he and the seized drugs have been handed over to Irilbung PS for further legal action.
