Imphal, May 27 2014:
A team of Indo-Myanmar Fraternal Alliance (IMFA) will be leaving Imphal tomorrow to meet Chief Minister of Myanmar's Sagaing region in the hope of finding possible ways to start import of fish and pigs from the neighbouring country to Manipur.
O Malesh, president of Indo-Myanmar Fraternal Alliance, who is leading the team, informed journalists today that a group of representatives of the Alliance will be leaving the State capital for Mandalay, Myanmar tomorrow on a business mission.
During the week-long visit, the IMFA team will meet Chief Minister of Sagaing region to find ways to begin import of fresh fish and pigs from that country, he said.
A single truckload of fish transported from Hyderabad to the State costs Rs 29,000 and so the Alliance thinks it would be much better and cheaper to import this item from Myanmar, he said.
The price or transportation charge for fresh fish caught from the Chindwin River would be cheaper when brought to the State, Malesh added.
In Nagaland's commercial town Dimapur alone, nearly 8,000 pigs are slaughtered for consumption of pork every day, he mentioned and added that if pigs from Myanmar are supplied to the neighbouring State through Manipur, it could become a lucrative business.
IMFA, a non-Governmental Organisation, has been formed by a group of like-minded people who believe that the bilateral ties of India and Myanmar should be improved.
