Imphal, May 08 2012:
Expressing dissatisfaction over slow progress and sub-standard manner of constructing the Bailey bridge over Barak River in between Dikiuram and Katang in Tamenglong district, Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur (ZSUM) has warned of imposing economic blockade along Imphal-Jiribam Road if the State Government and the Minister concerned do not blacklist and terminate the irresponsible engineers and contractors involved in the work at the earliest.
In a statement, Information & Publicity Secrertary of ZSUM David Kamei pointed out that construction of the Bailey Bridge was taken up by the State PWD under the NEC programme of 2006-2007.Five years have already passed but the bridge is still at its initial stage of construction work and as such the people are depending on traditional method of transportation that is to cross the river.
Informing that various complaints have been lodged in this regard to the department concerned by the people and the ZSUM, David lamented that none of these complaints have been entertained on the ground that ground that ZSUM is not technical expert over the matter.
Further the ZSUM had even urged the department for joint inspection of the bridge construction.
However, the Engineers and SOs who claimed themselves as technical experts declined, David lamented.
He further pointed out that the district highway stretching from Khongsang to Tamenglong is being neglected for the last many years and is lying in deplorable condition today.
Complaints have also been made about the DRDA office Tamenglong for its Imphal centric administration where no leniency could be expected by the general public.
The matter had also been reported to the state government but is still kept in abeyance, David lamented.
