Roadside cremation will continue till Govt grants alternative site: KHLDC

The residents of Konjeng Hazari Leikai along with its Meira Paibis (torch-bearing women vigilantes) have resolved that they will continue to perform the last rites of the deceased on roadsides along the Tiddim Road till the time an alternative cremation ground is provided by the State Government.
A press note issued by Konjeng Hazari Leikai Development Committee (KHLDC), Imphal General Secretary informed that the decision was taken at a joint meeting of KHLDC, Konjeng Hazari Development Club (KYDC) and Meira Paibis of the locality.
The KHLDC General Secretary stated that the meeting unanimously resolved to approach the responsible State authorities apart from Chief Minister O Ibobi for demanding an "alternative cremation ground at the nearest available place during the pendency of the relevant case" .
The meeting decided that till the time an alternative arrangement is made, the people of the locality will continue to perform the last rites of the deceased on the roadside in the acquired area of the traditional cremation ground.
"So pending available of an alternative cremation ground, no development work shall be allowed to be executed at the acquired site of the cremation ground by any authority", asserted the KHLDC.
The meeting also decided that the State Government will be held responsible in the event of any untoward incident arising out of the current situation.
