Doctor, students of MU, JNIMS recount horror in Imphal

Kuki doctor of RIMS hospital and students Manipur University and JNIMS hospital recounted the experience they had on the night of May 3 and the following day as the communal clash spread in the state.
Dr Margaret D Sinate of RIMS said that after so much of years and sacrifice they got the chance to study medicine m RIMS but on the faithful night of May 3 they asked for protection to the direc-tor of the medical college citing inadequate security measures especially the boys.
The director assured them pro-tection but was rather sluggish in doing the needful.
Even their own church where they used to gather and worship was burned down and they do not feel secured.
She also said that they escaped the violence on May 4 after they ran around pretending to be on duty rounds until CRPF personnel came and took them to the CRPF camp, she said.
She further said returning to Imphal is not an option anymore and urged the National Medical Council and Central government to look into their problems.
She said even their own Mizoram friends does not feel safe and do not want to return.
A student of Manipur Universi-ty, on the condition of anonym-ity, stated that on May 3 around midnight to 1 am they were about to be taken to the Army camp.
However, the army convoy was attacked and the vehicle in which they were taken out from MU was blocked by the mob.
The vehicle tyres were deflated and their Aad-haar cards checked.
Even tarpaulin cover of the vehicle was shredded and when the mob began to at-tack them physically, the army personnel resorted to blank firing after which the mob ran away.
A 3rd year BDS student in JNIMS said that the JNIMS authority is planning to conduct examination from June 19 even though the sit-uation remains tense.
Questioning as to whether they are a lesser student of JNIMS, the student asked if the JNIMS authority would be making an alternative arrange-ment for them.
The students from Churachan-dpur district also appealed to the Centre for an alternative arrange-ment so that they could continue with their academic studies.
Many students shared problems they faced after the eruption of violence on May 3 during an in-teraction with this correspondent Thursday.
A student recounted that a mob burned his class X documents and other relevant certificates and urged the Centre for creating conducive environment so that academic career of students is not affected.
Another student of Chura-chandpur Medical College said that statement made by his colleague Thokchom Mangal was totally false and baseless and clarified that no armed mob came and attacked the college.
He said that some volunteers came to protect the college and there was no destruction of the college or burning down of documents and others.
He also said that there was no beating or ill treatment of students in CMC and no snatching of mobile phones from the students.
