Imphal, May 08 2012:
The once acclaimed 'Sana Leibak Manipur' where the climatic condition was described as salubrious, seems to be heading towards devastation with the impact of global warming hitting the state hard.
The temperature in the state has been rising steadily at an alarming rate over the last few years.
Today the temperature in the state was recorded at 32.3 degree Celsius and weather forecast for tomorrow says that the mercury level is expected to rise 34 degree Celsius.
The main reason behind the rise in temperature of the state is the harmful practice of jhum cultivation carried out in the hills and the subsequent cutting down of trees and deforestation process practiced in other parts as well, according to information obtained from Manipur Pollution Control Board.
According to reports received from Meteorological Department, the temperature in Manipur has been rising consistently over the past few years.
Among the places in North Eastern part of India, Guwahati has been experiencing very high temperature.
But Manipur, which used to have finest climatic condition earlier, is not lagging behind Assam today, and the mercury level in Manipur is only expected to see an upswing in the years to come.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Golchandra Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer of Manipur Pollution Control Board, stated that Manipur has also started experiencing the impact of global warming with temperature rising gradually over the last few years.
This is mainly due to cutting down of trees on a large scale and alarmingly high deforestation process.
Jhum cultivation has also played a big role in the process of environmental degradation in the state.
He further explained that global warming is also caused by air pollution in different parts of the globe.
However, water pollution, though a factor for damaging the environmental condition of a particular region, does not directly contribute to global warming.
In Manipur, water pollution is the worst form of pollution faced by the people, he added.
