Imphal, May 09 2013:
With timely arrival of pre-monsoons, many people in Manipur, who have started worrying over shortage of water with all the rivers, ponds and lakes beginning to dry up, may have been able to taken a sigh of relief.
But it also has different story to tell for some people whose houses have been blown away and vegetables farms destroyed in the accompanying hailstorm.
According to reports received from the Meteorological office located at Tulihal Airport, the pre-monsoons normally arrive in Manipur in the month of April along with thunderstorm.
However, during the last couple of years, arrival of pre-monsoon had been rather erratic.
Even if it did arrive, it was confined to some districts of the State only while the other parts received very less or no rainfall at all.

But this time, pre-monsoon rainfalls have come along with thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms in almost all parts of the State and the problem of shortage of water, which the people have started experiencing has ceased.
The report further informed that, after the pre-monsoons, the monsoons would be arriving in the State by the end of May or beginning of June.
The amount of rainfall received since the beginning of May this year was 276.7 mm.
Last year, the amount of rainfall received upto the month of April was 91.1 mm only.
With the timely arrival of pre-monsoon rains in the State abdundantly, all the dried up ponds, lakes and rivers have been filled and the plants and vegetables have started sprouting out magnificently.
However, even though arrival of pre-monsoons has brought cheer to some people, the other side of the story is not so pleasing with many vegetable farms destroyed and houses blown away in the heavy hailstorm which hit some parts of the State.
