An evening of Manipuri modern songs

In fulfilling one of the public demands, All India Radio (AIR), Imphal is all set to broadcast live phone-in programme of modern songs very soon, Moirangthem Kanankumar, Programme Head of AIR, Imphal has announced.
He was speaking during a modern song concert held at the MFDC auditorium which was organised in connection with the year-long celebration of the Golden Jubilee celebration of AIR, Imphal.
Delivering the key note address of the function, Kanankumar said that ever since its inception as a full-fledged radio station on August 15, 1963, AIR, Imphal has been recording modern songs without a break.
All the recorded songs have been kept in the archives of AIR, Imphal.
All the modern songs in gramophone records too have been digitalized.
All these old records would be put on display during an exhibition to be hosted on the main occasion of golden Jubilee celebration of AIR, Imphal, he added.
He also informed that a number of old melodious songs have been found made into remix form and used in different Manipuri films in recent times.
Apart from being illegal, this is very unfortunate.
Aribam Shyam Sharma, who was also present on the occasion, said that with the performance of the drama "Narasingh" in the year 1925, the era of modern songs in the State started.
The modern songs are quite different from other songs sung in the State in all aspects.
He went on to say that whenever we talk of modern songs we tend to relate it with only love and romantic songs.
However, in reality, modern songs also include devotional songs, songs on national integration and songs based on the life of human beings.
B Jayentakumar Sharma, who was also spoke on the occasion, noted that apart from lyrics by AIR-approved lyricists, with songs on the lyrics by unknown lyricists beginning to be sung in the home of certain singers, the quality of Manipuri songs has lost.
Various artists of the State including Hamom Sadananda, Jiangam Kamei, O Swamikumar, M Roshibana, Asem Amarjit, Samurailatpam Naba Sharma (Naba Volcano) and Sorokhaibam Umoni among others presented their favourite numbers during the concert.
