Imphal, May 25 2013 :
While commiserating the victims of the alleged forced eviction of Kabo Leikai, the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) has implored Chief Minister O Ibobi and all concerned to work out a just and amicable solution to the problem arising out of Kabo Leikai eviction drive.
Expressing concern over the matter, AMCO in a statement said the act of the Government in evicting the people from Kabo Leikai reflects an air of insensitivity, if not of arrogance.
Even if the eviction was inevitable, the Govt should give enough time to vacate and ensure that they receive relocation assistance or compensation.
Serving the notice on May 18 and asking them to vacate on May 19 which is also Sunday and carried out the eviction drive on May 20 was a show of the 'unsympathetic attitude' and 'religious intolerance' of the authority, AMCO contended while adding that it was done despite fervent pleas from the residents to give them a few more days.
It was heart rending to see some of the affected families with little kids in deplorable condition in their makeshift shelters, the AMCO said citing it has visited the site.
The AMCO team also observed that three churches were demolished while a shrine in the same vicinity remained untouched.
It said it is unbecoming of the Govt to show such open discrimination against a religious group when we live in secular country.
"AMCO which stands for peaceful coexistence of the people of Manipur feels great concern to see such an act which can disturb peace among the people," the statement said.
