Intending candidate among 10 UGs nabbed

The Coordination Committee (CorCom), a common forum of seven militant organizations, has intensified its attacks on the Congress party with bombings and planting of bombs at various Congress offices in different parts of the State to bar the national political party from contesting in the ensuing January 28 scheduled polls, and at same time the State Government, taking up preemptive measures in the wake of the ban imposed against Indian National Congress (INC), has also apprehended 10 UG activists belonging to CorCom, including an intending candidate in polls to the 10th Manipur Assembly.
A Chinese handgrenade was found left at the residence of a Congress worker Kshetrimayum Bhumeshwor, 38 at Sagolband Mantri Leikai under Lamphel police station in the wee hours of Friday.
The bomb, which was wrapped with some ten-rupee notes, which police said could go off if handled or touched it unknowingly, was found at a makeshift Congress office set up for the coming general elections.
However, police rushed to the site and later defused the handgrenade in the late morning somewhere in the area after evacuating residents.
Meanwhile, a combined team of Imphal West and Imphal East police commandos arrested 10 CorCom activists, including its overground workers and supporters along with a huge cache of arms and ammunition including incriminating items during a search operation at Keirao Langdum in Imphal East.
The combined team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Imphal West, Dr.Ibomcha under the supervision of Imphal East Additional SP launched a massive search operation, which began from 11 pm on January 5 to early morning on January 6, in the area after receiving intelligence reports about the presence of some UG activists and subsequently arrested 10 members of CorCom, police said Friday.
The police said all the arrested were involved in the string of bomb attacks targeted at various locations where Congress offices situated, particularly in Imphal.
The arrested were identified as Ningthoujam Itomba, 44 s/o (L) N.Selung of Keirao Bitra Awang Leikai, Asem Momon Singh, 41 s/o A.Mutum of Langdum Makha Leikai, Arambam Abung Singh, 30 s/o A.Chaoba of Langdum Maning Leikai (bailed out PLA), Kangabam Bor Singh,43 s/o (L) K.Ibobi of Langdum Lairembi Leikai, Mutum Warjit Singh alias Manglemnganba, 22 s/o M.Madhumangol of Keirao Lairembi Leikai, Yenshembam Romeo, 29 s/o Y.Thoiba of Langdum Awang Leikai, Takhellambam Nobo Singh,34 s/o T.Iboton Singh of Sandrok mayai Leikai, Yenshembam Romeo Singh,42 s/o Y.Angou of Khangabok Mayai Leikai, Louriyam Thaba Devi,50 w/o L.Nganbi Singh of Keirao Khunou and Haobijam Shivachandra,29 s/o H.Yaima Singh of Bamon Kampu.
Three Chinese handgrenades, two AK 47 rifles with two magazines with 18 live rounds, one 9mm pistol (Mouser) with magazine loaded with four rounds, four demand notes signed by KCP Manglemnganba, one Maruti van white in colour, bearing registered number MN 04A/5871 and one Laptop (Dell) and HP Inkjet printer were seized from them, police source added.
