Imphal, January 07 2012:
The 6th Death Anniversary of Chingsubam Akaba Meetei, who had tirelessly worked for the preservation of indigenous script of the Meeteis was observed at Manipur Press Club today along with paying rich floral tributes to the departed soul.
Organisely jointly by Meetei National Front (MNF) and Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL), the observance function was graced by M Naodalenkhomba, President MEELAL as President; S Nibir, Rtd Principal, DM College of Commerce as Guest of Honour and N Tomba, Advisor, MEELAL and All Manipur Recognised Private Schools Welfare Association as Special invitee.
Speaking on the occasion, N Tomba said that we need to have our own language and script to identify ourselves.
A community without a language and script of its own is a dead community.
A person like Chingsubam Akaba, who revived the once vanished script of the Manipuris and included it in the formal education of the state, cannot be forgotten at all.
It is only through education that one learns the history of one's culture and tradition.
M Churamani, Advisor HERICOUN, who also spoke at the occasion, described Chingsubam Akaba Meetei as a leader, who gave more emphasised on his duties rather than his rights.
He was also a selfless person who not only contributed towards preservation of Meetei scripts, but also established Political Institutions based on Regionalism.
Delivering the Presidential speech, S Nilbir said that Chingsubam Akaba had taken up exceptional role towards preservation and popularization of Meetei Mayek script and as such we are able to see better results now.
A book on the life and work of Chingsubam Akaba should be brought out.
The "Chingsubam Akaba Ningshing Mana" for this year was awarded to Elangbam Ibohal Meetei on the occasion.
