The Congress party has finally announced its candidates who would contest in the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections even as the Election Commission has allowed candidates of Chandel, Ukhrul, Senapati and Tamenglong districts to file their nomination papers to the Assistant Returning Officer at Imphal West DC complex.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan yesterday, MPCC (I) president Gaikhangam announced the list of Congress candidates which included three sitting MLAs of other parties and an independent sitting MLA.
The MLAs who were elected on non-Congress tickets in the last election but given Congress tickets this time are MPP MLAs Dr Ng Bijoy, RK Anand and RJD MLA Thangkholun Haokip.
The independent MLA is Khangthuanang Panmei.
Explaining the allotment of Congress tickets to non-Congress MLAs, Gaikhangam stated that they were given party tickets based on their prospect of winning the election.
All the four MLAs have been given clearance by the AICC to join Congress party.
Claiming that the ban declared by the Coordinating Committee of seven UG groups on Congress party would have little impact, Gaikhangam stated that the party would strive to get majority and form the next Government.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has given its consent to allow candidates of 11 constituencies located in Chandel, Ukhrul and Senapati districts excluding those located under ADC Kangpokpi to file their nomination papers to Assistant Returning Officers of SDO Machi, SDO Phungyar, SDO Tadubi and SDO Tamei who would be stationed in the office complex of Imphal West DC.
