Imphal, April 28 2022:
In connection with the death of Shamom Ningol Ningthoujam Ongbi Chingkheinganbi, the police said that the cause of death is not yet known, and they are still awaiting a report from Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) on the samples which they sent for testing on Wednesday.
On Thursday, volunteers of Women Action For Development and United NGOs Mission Manipur along with media persons went for a fact-finding visit to Chingkheinganbi's parental home and her in-laws' residence.
During the visit to Chingkheinganbi's parental home at Arong Nongmaikhong, the fact-finding team met with the woman's father Shanjit, family members and the JAC convenor.
Speaking to the team, Shanjit conveyed that his daughter often suffered domestic violence at the hands of her husband Bijando and his family.
As a consequence, she got separated from Bijando and stayed at her parental home.
After 3 years of separation, Bijando coaxed Chingkheinganbi back to his home, after which the unfortunate incident occurred on April 21 .
Shanjit alleged that Bijando made Chingkheinganbi to cut off all contacts with her parental family.
They were informed of her hospitalisation by a neighbour.
The family contacted Bijando on the phone to inquire, who conveyed that Chingkheinganbi was taken to hospital due to poor health.
Bijando also said that he was in the courtyard when he was called inside the house by Chingkheinganbi.
When he entered, he found her collapsed on the ground, Shanjit said.
Shanjit further conveyed that according to Bijando, Chingkheinganbi was first taken to a doctor in Hiyangkhong who could not treat her.
She was then taken to Ragini Hospital in Yumnam Hospital and then to Raj Medicity, after her condition got worse.
However, when they (Shanjit's family) visited Raj Medicity, they were informed that his daughter was brought dead to the hospital.
Shanjit immediately filed a complaint to Mayang Imphal Police the same day, raising suspicions over his daughter's death.
Mayang Imphal Police registered a UD case and a JAC was formed on April 22, after which the post mortem examination was conducted at RIMS morgue.
Stating that the family agreed to the post mortem examination following assurances from police to produce the post mortem report within 7 days; Shanjit said that the police has failed to produce both the post mortem report and the cause of his daughter's death.
Thus, he appealed to the people to help in revealing the truth behind his daughter's death.
Meanwhile, JAC convenor L Amar said that although the police failed to provide the post mortem report within 7 days, the IO of the case showed a report regarding the post mortem examination.
The police informed that a test will be carried out in FSL to ascertain the cause of death and assured that facts of the case would be made clear by then.
However, as the demands of the JAC have not been met, any further course of agitation will be carried out after discussing with the people, he added.
Later, the fact-finding team visited Chingkheinganbi's in-laws at Khordak Dam Awang.
Speaking to the team, Bijando's elder brother Bidyasagar recounted that on the day of the incident, his younger brother had gone to his kid's school for a parents' meet.
Late afternoon, he (Bijando) informed that he had taken his wife (Chingkheinganbi) to the doctor due to poor health.
Bijando borrowed Rs 500 and Rs 200 from his two sisters-in-law to take his wife to the hospital.
When they asked Bijando how the situation came into being, he (Bijando) said that Chingkheinganbi fainted while they were having the afternoon meal.
As such, the entire family went to the hospital but she had passed away.
Bidyasagar further recounted 'that Chingkheinganbi had once fainted near a river bank due to an illness, while adding that she often had such fainting spells but recovered soon after.
Her paternal family is also well aware of her health episodes as well, he claimed.
Urging for the post mortem report to be made public so that the truth of the case can be established, Bidysagar said that if his younger brother is truly guilty, he should be punished according to the law.
However, such accusations should be put to a stop if one is found to be innocent, he asserted.
On the other hand, the IO of the case stated that that the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
Although the post mortem examination has been conducted, samples have been sent to FSL for further testing, which will help in establishing the facts of the case.
Thus, the police are waiting for the report from FSL, the IO said, while informing that statements of all relevant people have been recorded and further investigation is being carried out.
