Protest staged against price rise of essential goods

Imphal, April 28 2022:
Denouncing price hike of fuel and other essential commodities, All Manipur Nupi Marup staged sit-in-protest at Keishampat Lairembi hall near Keishampat Junction on Thursday.
Regarding the protest, Nupi Marup president Maibam Sakhi Devi said that hiking of petroleum prices by the Government of India has directly affected all sections of people with the women folks the hardest hit of the society as many of them are breadwinners of their respective families.
Such a challenging and distressful situation compelled Nupi Marup to carry out the sit-in-protest and demand reduction of prices of petroleum products, she reasoned, while contending that price hike or control of petroleum products is the prerogative of the government.
According to Sakhi Devi, collection of huge tax by government is the main reason for the increasing rate of prices of petroleum products in the country at present.
She then appealed to all the CSOs to come out and launch a concerted movement against hike of prices of petroleum products.
Nupi Marup secretary L Sumatibala, who also took part in the protest, said that global crisis cannot be blamed for price hike of petroleum products.
Government first cited COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for hike of prices of petroleum products and now blamed Russia-Ukraine war for the same, she said, adding that Nupi Marup will continue to stage protest against hike of petroleum prices.
