Victim knocks at MSCW's door

Imphal, July 13 2011:
A victim of Domestic Violence against Women who survived suicide bid after she consumed sulfuric acid today appealed to the Manipur State Commission for Women for justice against her in laws and husband.
The victim, Mayanglambam Ningol Moirangthem Ongbi Sangita (21) told reporters that she married to Moirangthem Geetchandra (30) son of Thaniljao of Kakching Wairi Sabal in 2009.After one month of their marriage, her mother in law Ibeyaima keeps chiding her in every step finding her faults.
Ibeyaima often scattered her clothes in the corridor for not keeping her clothes when she went out.
She did not allowed her mother to enter their house whenever she visit her daughter.
In many instances, the in law used to beat her for not taking her permission while attending her maternal house's occasions.
In December that year, she came to know that she was pregnant.
However, her mother in law told her to abort the child and not to think of bearing a child until her eldest brother in law is married.
In that situation her husband also took side of his mother and forced her to abort the child.
An aunt of her husband gave her some clothes to iron on June 24 this year.
Reacting on the matter her mother in law began to scold her alleging her for planning to ruin the peace of the family.
In the meantime, her husband came back and took his mother's side and threw away the iron.
After blaming her for the unrest in his life, he left.
Unable to bear the violences against her by her in laws, Sangita gave up hope to live her life and consumed the acid to end her life.
However after she survived the suicide attempt she thought to live her life for the cause of victims of domestic violence and decided not to return at her husband's home and teach them a lesson.
S Meghachandra, member secretary of the commission told reporters that Sangita became the first ever victim of domestic violence who came to the commission for justice after surviving suicide bid.
Sangita has become a living example of domestic violence against women, he said.
