Traditional Boat Race (Hiyang Tanaba) organized as part of the ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival by Tourism Department, Manipur, enthralled large crowds at Wangkhei Thangapat Mapal, Imphal East, today.
The boat race which was divided into different categories, including categories for married women and unmarried women, was participated by several teams wearing traditional attires.
Several prominent Manipuri film actors were also among the participants.
The function was graced by Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam, titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba, Konthoujam A/C MLA and Chairman of Tourism Corporation Limited, Manipur, Dr Sapam Ranjan, Yaiskul A/C MLA Thokchom Satyabrata, Mayang Imphal A/C MLA K Robindro and Sekmai A/C MLA H Dingo as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, Radheshyam underscored the importance of preserving the traditional cultures and sports of the State and asserted that the boat race, which is conducted every year as a main event of Manipur
Sangai festival, will be organized in a bigger manner from next year.
Boats have been an important component for the Manipuris in ancient times and were used in everyday affairs of Manipuri people as lakes and water moats were abundant during the time.
The tradition of boat race is part and parcel of Manipuri culture since the early ages as boat races were organized as a platform to showcase the skills and capabilities of boating, he said.
Stating that Wangkhei Thangapat is a historical place of Manipur, the Education Minister reminded that boat races have been held at various parts of the State in connection with religious events since the time of monarchs, including Wangkhei Thangapat.
Hence, preserving Wangkhei Thangapat is the need of the hour and it will also will help in enticing the tourists to come and visit the State, he observed.
He also assured that he will consult with the Chief Minister to preserve the moat.
Later mementos and certificates were presented to the participants of the traditional boat race.
