Mongken Government JB School compelled to shut down in absence of teachers

Imphal, December 16 2014: Even as the government is recruiting teachers and effecting transfer of teachers in different schools including in far flung areas to ensure maintenance of quality education in the State, Mongken Government JB School under Henglep sub-division in Churachandpur district has remained closed for the last one year due to lack of attention and intervention on part of the authorities concerned.

The Mongken Government JB School in Mongken village is situated around 21-km drive from Tuibong village in Churachandpur. Talking to this daily, Lunkhomang Haokip (37), a villager of Mongken said that the school was established way back in 1974 since then it has been teaching students enrolled in it by six seven teachers but due to transfer of the teachers and lack of enrollment of students, the junior school was compelled to close down.

Following the closure of the school, students of the village who seek education have to enroll in schools in Churachandpur incurring huge amount of time and time, the villager rued.

Lamenting that the village is lagging behind in every aspect mainly transportation and connectivity, he exclaimed that the village is also devoid of electricity, potable water and mobile network throwing life out of gear.

The village which is inhabited by around 400 people has been reeling under intense hardship in absence of basic amenities.

Farming is the main occupation of the villagers.

Though the villagers are producing abundant quantity of vegetable items, due to the poor transportation service, they are not able to sell vegetable products outside the village otherwise many of them could earn extra money.

If a villager has to sell vegetable items to sustain livelihood then he has to travel up to Churachandpur by foot, he said.

Khamlen Kipgen, headman of C Mungpi village, situated 4-km away from Mongken informed this daily that C Mungpi village is no exception in the pool of villages which lack basic amenities required for day to day life.

He said that the condition of healthcare in the village is worst than with its lone Primary Health Sub-centre situated 10-km away from the village lying in a pitiable condition.

Almost 90 percent of delivery case in the village is done with the help of local priests given that admitting a pregnant woman in the health centre is a nightmare.

There have been instances where patient succumbed while giving birth due to such unprofessional method adopted, he lamented.

Pointing out that distribution of eatable items under PDS is yet to be reached in the village; he asserted that the villagers would get a lease of life if the concerned MLA visits the village for once.
