Imphal, December 16 2014:
Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC), Manipur has on Tuesday expressed concern over what it termed sluggish improvement work on National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) which is a lifeline for the state, saying the council is ready to take up the work since the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is not likely to finish it by March 2015 .
"BRO has set a target to complete the Imphal-Jiribam road improvement work by March next year.
The work progress is too slow and so we do not think the organisation will be able to meet the target," TDC president H Ranjit told a press meet at Yaisana Hotel.
He accused the BRO of misappropriating funds meant for various road development works in Manipur.
"BRO is cheating the people by claiming that funds have been delayed by the Government," Ranjit alleged.
He said that both the state and Central Governments have not been able to rein in BRO which has been tasked to improve the NH-37 included in the 100-day Programme of the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.
Ranjit demanded the Government remove BRO from the task and replace it with a work agency.
"TDC is ready to take up the work if BRO is not likely to meet the target," he said.
