Cabinet approves private varsity with Sangai eponym

The State Cabinet has today decided to set up Dhanamanjuri University in addition to a private university which would be named after the State animal Sangai.
Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting which was presided by Chief Minister O Ibobi, Government spokesman and Educa- tion Minister M Okendro said that the State's first private university would be named after Sangai so as to popularise the State animal across the world.
Necessary bill for establishment of the two univer- sities would be tabled in the forthcoming winter session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Informing that the private university would be set up at Churachandpur, Okendro said that 7500 to 8500 students pass out from different colleges of Manipur every year with graduate degrees.
All these graduates cannot be absorbed in Manipur University and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur .
Manipur University has a total post graduate seats of 1240 while IGNTU-RCM has just 120 post graduate seats.
As such, 60 to 70 per cent of the graduates either go outside the State or leave formal education.
Considering all these points, the State Cabinet decided to set up a State uni- versity and a private university.

Dhanamanjuri University is one of the 200 universities selected to be set up anew across the country under RUSA.
The Union Human Resources Development Ministry has already agreed to sanction Rs 55 crore for establishment of Dhanamanjuri University.
DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, Teachers Education, Hindi Training Institute, GP Women's College and LMS Law College would be affiliated to Dhana-manjuri University.
As agreed by the Cabinet meeting, seven Sankirtan teachers would be appointed on regular basis against vacant posts in addition to appointing 92 staff nurses on contract basis for 26 Primary Health Centres.
For appointment of the staff nurses, local candidates who reside near the PHCs would be given preference and they would be appointed for the specific PHCs.
The State Cabinet also gave its consent on upgrading 50-bedded hospitals of Moreh, Ukhrul, Senapati and Ta-menglong to 100-bedded hospitals.
The Cabinet meeting further agreed to table the Manipur Protection of Interest of Depositors Bill 2014 in the forthcoming winter session of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
