Driver assaulted

A group of armed miscreants allegedly assaulted the driver of a mini-truck loaded with betel leaf (kwa mana) today around 3 pm at Kambiron along Imphal-Jiribam highway in Tamenglong district.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, owner and driver of the truck, Laishram Moti (53) of Sagolband Nepra Menjor Leikai said he was stopped near Kambiron by four armed men.
Two leela artistes (nupi sabi) were also on board the truck.
The miscreants were armed with a pistol, sing barrel shot gun and iron rod, Moti said.
He was immediately taken to the residence of a betel leaf trader identified as Angam.
Although he is known to Angam, the miscreants had not allowed them to meet.
After detaining him for around 2 hours, the men started beatinghim with the iron rod, he said.
Moti was ferrying a total of 57 packs (polang) of betel leaf from Fulertal in Cachar district of Assam.
The miscreants also dumped ten packs of betel leaf worth about Rs 1 lakh into a nearby gorge.
On reaching Imphal, the driver got examined at RIMS hospital.
Betel leaf traders present at the press meet strongly condemned the assault on driver Moti.
