Imphal, April 01 2015 :
The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union (IGNTUSU-RCM) has set on fire properties of IGNTU-RCM at Adimjati campus today to protest alleged failure of the university authority to fulfil the demands of the students' union.
"As the VC of IGNTU, Amarkantak, Prof TV Kattimani has failed to respond to the charter of demands submitted by the IGNTUSU-RCM on March 9, the students are compelled to take up the agitation under the banner of 'save IGNTU-RCM," K Bowang Kho, president of IGNTUSU-RCM said.
Amongst others, the demands of IGNTUSU included immediate appointment of a Director, regularisation of guest faculties, provisions of adequate infrastructure and amenities for the staff and students alike, fully computerised and digitised library, adequate teaching and non-teaching staff as per UGC norms for all existing departments, extending Rs 1000 monthly stipend to all tribal students as assured by the VC, introduction of vocational and professional courses, etc.
The students' union had submitted a memorandum to the VC on March 9 last, Bowang Kho said.
The president further said that they are launching the agitation with the sole aim of drawing the immediate attention of the authority concerned towards making up the various deficits that have marred the smooth functioning of the varsity and not otherwise.
He also said that the agitation will continue until the demands are met while adding that the construction works of the university campus at Makhan will also be stopped from April 6 as part of the agitation.
