The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal has confirmed the outbreak of Avian Influenza at the poultry unit of ICAR, Lamphelpat.
Receipt of the positive report from Bhopal was conveyed to the media through an official notification by Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga today.
Announcing the outbreak of Bird Flu in the State, the Chief Secretary in the official notification said that the epicentre of the outbreak is the poultry unit of ICAR and added that all areas within a radius of 1 to 10 kms have been declared as infected zone and surveillance zone.
To contain and control the disease, the Chief Secretary has spelt out six steps.
All birds within the infected zone shall be culled and buried with all formalities as per the action plan.
Compensation for the culled birds will be paid at the rate fixed in consultation with the Government of India.
All movement/transportation and sale of poultry birds/products including eggs within the surveillance zone is banned with immediate effect.
The District Magistrate, Imphal West with technical assistance from the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department will initiate all contingency procedures for control and containment of the disease.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department will also deploy Rapid Response Team of Imphal West district immediately, said the notification and added that a control room has been set up at the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry which will open 24x7 .
On the other hand the daily report on control and containment of Avian Influenza said that a joint meeting of all District Joint Directors was held at the Directorate office for taking up immediate steps for control and containment procedures, call up RRT members of 10 teams of Imphal West and Imphal East districts, readiness for quick action on control and containment procedures, to set up control room at the Directorate office, setting up quarantine station for RRTs at the Directorate office while culling operation has started from ICAR poultry unit.
So far 900 number of chicks (8 days old), six adult ducks have been culled while 1550 number of eggs, 15 number of 70 kg bags (feeds) have been destroyed while the culled birds have been buried in one pit.
