Imphal, October 25 2012:
Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) has condemned the Government of Manipur for allegedly remaining silent spectator to the unprecedented escalating armed conflict between various armed opposition groups in Tamenglong district.
In a statement issued by its Media Cell, NPMHR asserted that inapt handling of the situation by district administration and the law enforcing agencies tantamount to encouraging the non-state actors to take the law into their own hand.
The Government of Manipur has completely failed in its obligations towards ensuring protection of lives and properties of its citizens, it alleged.
NPMHR also expressed serious concern over continuous defiant of the wishes of people to maintain peace and respect the peace agreements by the non-state actors.
The armed offensives between armed groups in Tamenglong district have led to loss of civilian lives, tortured and degrading treatments to villagers.
The move of armed cadres brandishing assault rifles and other deadly weapons in the middle of the town where many school going children and innocent civilians were condensed, creating fear psychosis, curtaining all basic and fundamental freedom of the entire areas are but the acts of terrorism which cannot find a place in any of the progressive society including the Zeliangrong Naga.
Many of the residents were forced to dislocate from their home; the students of Jawahal Nehru Navodaya, a Centrally run residential school were forced to leave their hostel jeopardising their academic session.
The reported acts of armed cadres intimidating the medical practitioners in duty inside the hospital, repeated loitering around hospital compound disturbing the normal functioning of district and only hospital in Tamenglong has put entire district at risk and jeopardise the health situation, the human rights body decried.
Calling upon the Government of Manipur, district administration and laws enforcing agencies to act for restoring normalcy in the district, NPHMR also appealed to the armed opposition groups to stop hatred campaign against other groups and restraint from armed offensive and respect public voices to maintain peace in the district.
