Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) in coordination with Manipur Independence Day Observation Committee and Wangdei Meitei Leikai Development Committee celebrated the 75th anniversary of Independence Day of Manipur on Sunday at Wangdei Meitei Leikai, Langol.

Regarding the celebration, Observation Committee convener N Rupachandra said that Manipur existed as a sovereign power in South East Asia for a long time but became part of British colonial power on April 27, 1891 after the defeat in the Anglo-Manipuri War the same year.
After remaining under British colonial rule for 56 years, Manipur regained freedom on August 14, 1947 as a result of freedom movement launched across the globe after the end of World War II and the changing global scenario during that time.
A new phase of independent Manipur began from August 14, 1947 and even conducted democratic election in 1948 under the Manipur Constitution Act, 1947.As second nation in South East Asia, a democratic government ruled Manipur from October 18, 1948 and had all the characteristics of a sovereign nation.
However, after around two years of attaining freedom from the British and having self-administration through adult franchise, India annexed Manipur after the then king was forced to sign the merger agreement on September 21, 1949 in Shillong which came into effect from October 15, 1949.Nevertheless, historical facts about Manipur's existence as a sovereign power for a long time and regaining of the sovereign status from the British on August 14, 1947 after remaining under the British colonial rule for 56 years remain intact till date, he said, adding that these historical facts will remain forever.
People of Manipur are celebrating the75th anniversary of independence of Manipur to remember the sacred day of getting independence from the British on August 14, 1947, N Rupachandra said, adding that the entire people of the land should discuss about importance of the day and shoulder responsibility for making Manipur/Kanglei society a strong and concrete one.
