Imphal, August 14 2022:
Like in every year, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) will observe the 57th Hunger Marchers' Day on August with this year's theme 'Learning for emancipation' .
Speaking to media persons at its office here on Sunday, AMSU president Haobijam Chalamba recounted the protest launched against the government for causing artificial scarcity of rice in the state on August 27, 1965 wherein four student leaders namely Oinam Nabakumar, Laishram Chaobal, Nongmeikapam Pramodini and Waikhom Nilamani were martyred.
While expressing apprehension of a second hunger march in view of hiking prices of essential items in the state, he urged the government to look into the matter.
Chalamba informed that the observance will begin by paying tribute at the Pishum Chingamacha memorial complex followed by a public rally till DM College of Arts ground located inside DMU campus, where a meeting will be held.
AMSU headquarters will also organise a state level general knowledge writing competition while a play will be staged at Rupmahal theatre.
On August 28, the union will celebrate its foundation day and a blood donation camp will be organised as a part of it, he continued, while urging people to extend all possible help (financially, morally and physically) towards organising these events successfully.
While urging the people to light a candle at their homes as a mark of respect to the martyrs, Chalamba further exhorted to halt festive events for the
day on August 27 .
