Imphal, August 18 2026:
The Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council has demanded immediate postponement of the census in Manipur, saying it should not be conducted amid the prevailing unrest in the State.
In a statement, the CPI Manipur State Council said while census is for the welfare of the people, conducting it now in a conflict-hit Manipur will only create further division and insecurity.
The party alleged that the current Government is not a people's Government and is ignoring public sentiment by going ahead with census work despite widespread opposition.
The CPI criticized the use of force, arrests and "inhuman treatment" against people protesting against the census.
"The voice of the people is the voice of God.
It is not right to conduct census at gunpoint after creating panic among the public", the statement said.
Referring to the crisis in Manipur since May 3, 2023, the party said the Government's decision to proceed with census shows it is not accountable to the people.
It also urged security forces to uphold democratic norms and not become a tool of the Government's "wrong policies".
Citing historical examples of security forces standing against unjust rulers, the CPI called on Manipur's security personnel to stand against what it termed as "antipeople" decisions and demanded that the Government immediately postpone the census operation in the State.
