Imphal, October 24 2015 :
The 26th Loktak Day will be observed at Loktak Lairembi Lampak, Thanga on October 27 .
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, organising committee member and Thanga AC MLA T Mangibabu said that the committee has been observing the day every year since 1990 with an aim to save the largest freshwater lake of the North East region.
Informing that a discussion session on the present state of the lake and its possible means of protection would be held as part of the observation, he said that many experts would participate in the discussion session.
Mangibabu further said that the size of the lake is 236.21 sq km and its depth is 2.03 metre.
However, the matter of concern is that the depth of the lake is depleting fast, he said.
Mangibabu said that the fast changing structure of the lake indicates that it would dry up one day if necessary measures are not taken up in time.
He also said that they have been drawing the attention of the Government to the matter by organising seminars, debates and open discussions as part of the Loktak Day observation every year since 1990 .
