Imphal, April 28 2015 :
A rare butterfly was found and photographed near Kwatha village under Yangoupokpi Wildlife Sanctuary by an exploration team of PFA Manipur including a wildlife photographer from Assam .
According to a statement issued by PFA Manipur, a wildlife scientist claimed that the photograph could be the first photo of such species taken in India.
The butterfly is known as Slate Awlet (bibasis mahintha) and was photographed by Basabjit Chakraborty, a wildlife photographer from Assam.
Dr Krushnamegh Kunte, a butterfly scientist from NCBS Bangalore commented, "Basab's beautiful images of the Slate Awlet must be the first image of this species from India, and this may very well be the first record of the species from Manipur in decades.
The species was collected in Manipur nearly a hundred years ago by Lt Col HC Tytler.
