Centre inks truce pact with NSCN (R), calls off agreement with NSCN (K)

New Delhi, April 28 2015 : The Government of India has signed a ceasefire agreement with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Reformation) [NSCN/R] .

The agreement was signed by Shambhu Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs and Wangtin Konyak and P Tikhak, co-convenors on behalf of NSCN/R.The ceasefire and the mutually agreed cease fire ground rules will apply for a period of one year with effect from today.

Wangtin Konyak and P Tikhak floated the new outfit, NSCN (R) after they were expelled by Khaplang from the NSCN (K) some time back.

After their expulsion, the two, who were at one point of time two of the senior most cadres of the NSCN (K), floated the NSCN (Reformation) on April 13 .

The Government of India has also extended the ceasefire with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khole-Kitovi) [NSCN/KK] for a further period of one year with effect from today.

An agreement to this effect was signed by Shambhu Singh and Jack Jimomi, Supervisor, GPRN/NSCN on behalf of NSCN/KK.

The Government of India has meanwhile decided not to engage with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) [NSCN/K] any longer and therefore the earlier ceasefire agreement with NSCN/K is no longer valid.

Meanwhile taking a tough stand, the Government today cancelled its ceasefire agreement with dominant Naga insurgent group NSCN (Khaplang) and decided not to engage with it in future, reports PTI from New Delhi.

"The Government has decided not to engage with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) [NSCN/K] any longer and therefore the earlier ceasefire agreement with NSCN/K is no longer valid," a Home Ministry statement said.

The Ministry has not clarified the reasons for break down of the talks and cancellation of the ceasefire pact.

However, sources said, the decision has been taken in view of the NSCN-K's involvement in insurgent activities, violating the ground rules of the ceasefire.

The ceasefire agreements inked with different factions of the NSCN have seen its share of ups and downs.

On April 10, the NSCN (IM) had stayed away from the High Powered Committee constituted by the Government of Nagaland.

This came amid talks that an agreement between the said faction of the NSCN and the Government of India may be inked this year.
