Assault of student leader, two village chiefs ; KSO GHQs calls 48-hr bandh in hill dists

Following the physical assault of the president of Kuki Students' Organisation, Chandel district and 2 village chiefs by 24 AR personnel at Khudengthabi yesterday, KSO, General Headquarters has called a 48-hour bandh in all the hill districts of the State starting midnight today.
Speaking to media persons today at Tribal Market complex, KSO, GHQs general secretary Seiboi Haokip stated that KSO, Chandel district president Doumang Haokip was returning home with Koparsing Lamkang, chief of Kotal Khunthak village and Letkhosei Haokip, chief of S Lamphel village after attending the funeral service of Joldam village chief at Moreh.
Three of them were initially stopped and harassed by 24 AR JCO.
The matter was brought to the notice of a Major of 24 AR who was also present at the check-post.
Instead of extending help, the Major ordered the AR personnel to thrash them, charged Seiboi Haokip.
He also said that KSO, GHQs will not take the incident lightly.
Harassment, physical assualt and verbal abuse by 24 AR at Khudengthabi check-post are being encountered by commuters everyday.
He added that the authority concerned should take up appropriate action against the JCO, AR personnel and the particular Major at the earliest.
KSO, Chandel district has also vehemently condemned the incident and resolved to extend co-operation to KSO, GHQs in all course of agitation.
ATSUM has also strongly condemned the brutal assault of KSO Chandel president Doumang Haokip and two village chiefs by personnel of 24 Assam Rifles at Khudengthabi.
Urging the authorities concerned to immediately book and punish the culprits at the earliest, ATSUM said that it has endorsed the bandh called by the KSO in connection with the incident.
