Imphal, May 08 2012:
Drawing the attention of the Works Minister into the alleged slow pace of progress in construction of suspension bridge over Barak river in between Dikiuram and Katang in Tamenglong district, the Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) has threatened to launch total bandh or economic blockade along the Imphal-Jiribam road if the authority concerned fails to address their plights .
Expressing deep concerned over the slow pace in the construction of the suspension bridge, ZSUM in a statement said the people had to rely on the traditional mode of transportation like bamboo raft even after 5 years into the construction of Bailey Bridge over Barak River.
Based on many complaints from various sections of the people, the Zeliangrong students' body had urged the then Work Minister in 2008 about the alleged sub-standard work.
But the complaint was dismissed on the ground that ZSUM lacked technical knowledge, the ZSUM statement recalled.
Stating that the then Works Minister was hoodwinked by the PWD officials, the students' body also urged the present Works Minister to pursue its complain while also demanding termination of those alleged officials and contractors.
The ZSUM also pointed out that the stretch of road between Khongsang and Tamenglong is also neglected for the past many years even if the matter was highlighted to the Government of Manipur umpteen times.
