New industrial policy framed: Nemcha

With the lapse of the existing Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy 2017 on March 31 this year, the government has framed a new industrial policy encompassing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) as well as large scale industries.
This information was given by commerce and industry minister Nemcha Kipgen during the discussion of demand for grants for Textiles, Commerce and Industry department in Wednesday's session of the assembly.
Moving policy cut motions opposition members K Meghachandra and Th Lokeshwar brought up issues like lack of policy to promote MSME and large-scale industries, non-provision of loom for weavers and lack of training activities.
In response, Nemcha Kipgen said that the existing Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy 2017 expired on March 31 this year.
Consequently, the government has framed a new industrial policy while encompassing MSME and large scale industries.
A one-day workshop on Framing of Industry and Investment Promotion Policy was held on May 19 to seek suggestions and opinions from stakeholders, which were used in preparing the Draft Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy 2022.The final draft will be tabled before the cabinet soon, she added.
The minister said that the government is promoting sale and exhibition of state's handloom products in different cities.
The chief minister distributed 2475 looms in a function held at City Convention Centre on June 6.Weavers are allowed to get their looms from their nearest manufacturers to reduce transport charge.
The Centre has approved capacity building in textile sector for providing training to 25,000 weavers and the department is all set to begin the training soon.
Interested weavers can apply for the training when the department publishes advertisements.
Trainees under the programme need to pass the course, she said.
Supplementing to the responses given by the minister, CM Biren said that the government is all set to supply yarns to weavers at wholesale rate by acquiring a shop on the first floor of Ima Keithel.
He also said that the government had already issued instructions against copying designs of state handloom products by garment factories located outside the state.
MLAs Rameshwar and Ram Muivah also participated in the discussion.
