Manipur records first COVID-19 death

COVID-19 claimed its first victim in Manipur as a 56-year-old person from Khongjom Sapam in Thoubal district died at RIMS today.
He was admitted at RIMS on May 22 with multiple health issues like chronic kidney failure, long standing Type-2 Diabetes Melitus, Urosepsis and hypertension.
He was found COVID-19 positive on July 26 .
He died at around 2 am today, said statement of RIMS Medical Superintendent Professor Ch Arunkumar.
The body of the 56-year-old is being kept at RIMS morgue and it has been handed over to the Imphal West district administration to be disposed of within 48 hours as per the guideline, said sources.
Sources in the Imphal West district administration said that the family of the deceased has given their consent to the administration performing the last rites.
However, a Government consent is awaited as per protocol.
The Deputy Commissioner has written to the Government for the consent, added the sources.
Meanwhile, sources said that another COVID-19 patient with kidney ailment is in critical condition at RIMS.
There are at least four COVID-19 patients with comorbidity at present at RIMS.
While two of them have kidney related ailments, the other two have heart problems.
The number of cases among the staff of RIMS has reached 19 including the PG student (Medicine) who tested positive for the virus yesterday.
About 700 staff of the institution will be tested for the virus tomorrow, added the sources.
On the other hand, the number of cases in the State has reached 2458 with 141 testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, said a report of the COVID-19 Common Control Room.
The 141 persons including 117 males and 24 females tested positive for the virus at RIMS (12 cases), JNIMS (78), District Hospital Thoubal (7), Churachandpur (9), Tamenglong (4), Babina Diagnostics Centre (2), 1st MR (3) and Imphal West RAT (26) .
They hail from Churachandpur (51), Imphal West (30), Thoubal (8), Imphal East (7), Bishnupur (2), Senapati (29), Kakching (7), Kamjong (3) and Tamenglong (4) .
The risk factor and travel history of most of the cases are under investigation and are being awaited.
They are being shifted to COVID-19 Care Centres, said the report of the COVID-19 Common Control Room.
The number of recovered persons has reached 1653 with 38 persons recovered and discharged from COVID-19 Care Centres today.
The 38 persons were discharged from CCCs of Meitram (16), Ukhrul (7) and Thoubal (9) after they were found COVID-19 free on RT PCR test, said the report of the COVID-19 Common Control Room.
According to a late report, four more cases (in addition to the above mentioned cases) have been detected at Thoubal District Hospital after rapid antigen test.
With this the number of cases now stands at 2462 with 809 active cases.
The recovery rate is 67.14 percent.
Meanwhile, sources in the Health Department said that the State is running low on COVID-19 test kits.
To reinforce and increase the stock, at least 4 lakh rapid antigen test kits have been ordered, added the sources.
Following detection of new cases in Thoubal district, the district administration has declared some areas as containment zones.
The containment zones include areas of Wangjing bazar and Khangabok Part-I .
Areas of Wangjing bazar were sealed off after three residents tested positive, while areas of Khangabok Part-I were sealed off after one resident tested positive.
On the other hand, containment measures and restrictions imposed in two quarantine centres have been lifted by the Thoubal district administration today.
The quarantine centres include Sangaiyumpham Higher Secondary School (Block-C), Khangabok AC and New Ideal High School, Thoubal.
