World Malaria Day observation kicks off

The month-long World Malaria Day observance, organised by District Vector Borne Diseases Control Society (DVBDCP), has kick started at the community hall of Khabam Bamdiar from today.
The inaugural function was attended by S Purnakishore Pradhan of Yarou Bamdiar Gram Panchayat as the chief guest, Dr S Bimolakumari, Chief Medical Officer, Imphal West as the president and Dr N Thoinao, Imphal West district Nodal Officer of DVBDCP as the guest of honour.
Giving his key note address, Dr RK Singhajit said that more attention has been given to Yarou Bamdiar as three Malaria cases were detected in the area last year.
Similar awareness programmes would be held in nine other localities of Imphal West district this month, he added.
He said that these awareness programmes have been necessitated with the onset of rainy season.

In her speech, Dr S Bimolakumari said that precautionary measures must be taken up by keeping the surroundings neat and clean and preventing mosquito bites.
She also advised the gathering not to keep stagnant water in empty pots and tyres etc, where mosquitos can lay eggs.
Later, a medical team tested the blood samples collected from the locality.
Meanwhile, District Health Society, NVBDCP Imphal East also observed World Malaria Day under the theme, 'Invest in the future, defeat Malaria' at the office complex of Chief Medical Officer, Imphal East today.
Imphal East DC M Joy, CMO Dr Pushpa Rai and Imphal East Up-Adhyaksha P Sunder attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
In his keynote address, District Malaria Officer Dr Kh Indra said that of the 22 malaria cases detected in Imphal East in 2013, 18 were in Jiribam sub-division.
In 2014 as well, 11 cases were detected in Jiribam of the total 15 cases of the district, he added.
Speaking at the occasion, M Joy said that Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue are the major vector borne diseases which spread at the time of rainy season.
Saying that viruses are stronger during warm-rainy season, M Joy said that cleaning of drains and keeping surroundings clean are must to prevent spread of these diseases.
Fever is the early symptoms of most of the vector borne diseases, M Joy asked the gathering to consult doctors if they are suffering from unusual fever.
Regarding, Bird Flu outbreak, he said that culling of fowls has concluded.
